Silk Wall Hanging Log Cabin Quilt
From the collection of the Shelburne Museum Founder
I don't know why we
feel we have to "save" early antique quilts, but we do, and it
appears that we aren't the only ones! This Log Cabin quilt was
purchased from the collection of Electra Havemeyer Webb,
the founder of the Shelburne Museum in Vermont, who also must have
had the "save" instinct! This 1880's Barn Rising variation is
HAND PIECED using 1" wide silk fabrics (VERY
Victorian!) with a black silk Prairie Point binding. Measuring 58"
x 56" (not counting the binding), it has no batting, a Prairie Point
binding, and a floral print on cream silk back. 1880's silk is
notorious for splitting, and this example is no exception. Someone
was planning on repairing this quilt, and has removed (but pinned)
some of the pieces in preparation. If you're looking for a Winter
project, this is it! It can be restored, or used "as is" as a wall
hanging.
